Scotland Sanctuary

The Need

The world is going through a transition, a period of upheaval. This is apparent in our personal lives, in our local communities, and in world events. There are so many pressures, uncertainties, and strains. We struggle to find a quiet place within ourselves from which to tackle these challenges. The increase in mental health issues, anxiety, suicide, domestic and family violence, feelings of alienation, insecurity, and disempowerment point to the fact that somethig needs to change – and the best place to start is with ourselves.

The Model

The initiative will be launched by the creation of a first Sanctuary for Humanity in Scotland – a haven where visitors can find refuge, renewal and inspiration. Over time, different aspects of human spirituality and endeavour will be explored – individually and collectively – through retreats, workshops, gatherings, or simply through spending time alone.

The Sanctuary for Humanity is based on four elements that will support an open-hearted, financially-sustainable, and replicable model that can be applied to different locations around the world.

  • Its facilities will provide the essential elements for a holistic experience. Its spaces will welcome those in need of respite, whether for healing, contemplation, recovery from trauma, or simply being. It will include accommodation units, workshop areas, meeting and gathering spaces, kitchen gardens, art studios, music and movement spaces, dining rooms, as well as areas for quiet reflection.
  • The facilities will coalesce around an architecturally-beautiful central Sanctuary building within an inviting landscaped setting. It will be a quiet and peaceful space, available to people from all religions, philosophies, beliefs and walks of life, to honour the sacred in their lives.
  • The large acreage on which the Sanctuary for Humanity will be located, will enable visitors to explore its wider natural environment.
  • Additional facilities will develop over time to enable initiatives that flow from being in this inspiring environment – initiatives such as charitable endeavours, research and development, and other undertakings based on true human values.

A wide range of people, local and international, for whom this concept resonates, will be encouraged to contribute and participate in its development. In the broadest sense, this initiative will be ‘Created by Humanity for Humanity’.

Sacred

By sacred we mean that which we hold most precious in our inner and outer lives that unites us, inspires us, and arouses in us a sense of awe, reverence, love, and gratitude.

Sanctuary

By sanctuary we mean a safe place where you can be your authentic self, reveal your vulnerabilities, retreat into your inner life or confidently reach out for the embrace of others. It is an inner and outer space of reflection, recuperation, and inspiration.
